the music of Robert Summers Potterton III


Robert Summers Potterton III (b. 1986) has been an active musician for over a decade. His music has been heard in films, on television, in theater productions, and in the concert hall, and his clients come from all over the world. Best known for his original compositions and keyboard improvisations, Robert has also had considerable experience as an arranger/orchestrator, songwriter, conductor, and educator.
After years of playing by ear, he received his first formal instruction in piano at age 11, followed by organ study with Dr. Richard Mueller for two years. He performed his first church service on July 30, 2000, and afterwards began actively taking on other positions, including serving as pianist and worship team leader for The King’s School in Bolton, assistant organist (and later director of music) at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Coventry, Connecticut, organist (and later director of music) at Hope Lutheran Church in Storrs, organist at First Congregational Church in Windham, guest organist at Zion Lutheran Church in Manchester, guest organist at Saint Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Willimantic, and organist at United Methodist Church in Bolton.
During his four years in college, he served as organist at Saint Paul Lutheran Church
in Allen, NY, and also performed frequently for chapel services, recitals, and evening
Lenten services for the Houghton Theological Society. In recognition of his activity
as a musical entrepreneur, he was awarded the Robert MacKenzie Scholarship two years
in a row, followed by the Charles Finney Organ Scholarship his senior year. From
2006-
Robert has recently been accepted on full scholarship into the Master of Sacred Music degree program in Organ Performance at Boston University, where he will be studying in the fall with Peter Sykes. He currently resides with his wife, Carissa, in Brockton, Massachusetts, and continues to serve as Minister of Music & Organist at Saint Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church in Dedham.
